The Big Island is Hawaii's only island with active volcanoes. It also boasts two of Hawaii's highest peaks--Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet and to the north, Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet.
You can fly into Keahole International Airport on the Kona side of the island or Hilo Airport on the east side. Visit South Point and you'll be at the southernmost point of the United States.
